And I'm still not ginger!

Hello there...

If you've found your way here, I'm guessing you're a regular and/or former reader of my column which has been published - and well-supported - by GeekPlanetOnline for the last nine years... Queer Eye For The Sci Fi. If you are...great! If not... welcome!

The original concept was a regular (ahem) column in which I discussed elements of LGBT representation in science fiction and fantasy (aka "genre") media.

From Doctor Who's "gay agenda" to, erm, discussion about gay characters in Doctor Who, via zebras and Klingons and bears (oh, myyyyyy...) I hope my columns have at least entertained, if not informed and maybe even provoked some thought and discussion. For me, I'm happy if they're read and it is for that that I will be forever grateful to everyone over at GeekPlanetOnline for giving me what some might call my first break*.

Sadly, but for the very best reasons, GeekPlanetOnline is closing its doors soon. However, I'm determined that Queer Eye... should carry on in some form or other. It was never the most prolific of columns, and, given my full time job of barely holding the NHS together, I doubt that will change.

The general nonsense will continue at whatever rate seems appropriate. There may be minor changes in tone as I adapt to only speaking for myself - not that I've ever been censored, I hasten to add, but perhaps I was aware on some level that my words could reflect on others.

The general push will be the same, although I may feel more able to stray away from genre fiction. Let's be honest, my epistle on the rampant homophobia in Friends had better be published soon or it will rival a Tolkien novel for lack of brevity.

My indiscriminate use of fragmented sentences, inexplicable comma use, and (just the odd) parenthetical aside will also, no doubt, continue.

Please bear with me as I build this blog into something approaching a suitable platform for my witterings, as I muck about with templates, fonts and backgrounds.

My first change has been, obviously, the title. Beyond the Coda was, well, an old title for something else and now cryptic enough to make you wonder, to think... However, "Queer Eye For The Sci Fi" does remain in plain sight... if you know where to look.

My prior columns have been archived. Whether they wind up in an archive-style blog, or reprinted here at appropriate junctures, remains to be seen. My favourites, at least, will no doubt find their way back online.

But anyway, on with the nonsense. Let's start with a look at what's happening in the world of Star Trek...

*Others at CUE in Dundee and, indeed, Roamer at the Lochaber News might disagree...
